Mummy or Me - Finding the balance

These days I don't get a lot of time to myself. I have a breastfed Baby and my husband works away all week. My daughter only sleeps for maybe an hour & a half all day, and that's not at one time. I'm lucky to finish a cup of tea while its still warm let alone have quality 'me' time.

I'm sure I'm not alone in this situation. I can imagine there are many other mums out there who struggle to find time for themselves. Between looking after Babies, washing, vacuuming, mopping, cooking and generally keeping the house running it just doesn't feel like there are enough hours in the day. So how do You find that balance between being mummy and being You with the very limited time You have? I'm still trying to find the complete answer to this question, but I have found little bits & pieces that I'm sure will one day all add up.

I find that most of my 'me' time is after my Baby has finally gone to bed of a night. Its the only time all day that I have a decent block of Baby free time. The main thing that I love doing is my nails. I love doing some funky nail art, it makes me feel like me. It makes me feel good. I was determined to keep this up after having a Baby. I also love doing crafty things like making little tops for my daughter or doing some scrap booking. Some nights I just pour myself a glass of bubbly or grab some chocolate, switch on my trashy tv shows & switch off my brain. I think this can be the most therapeutic!

I believe that You need to do little things every day to make yourself feel good. Whether it be putting on some mascara, wearing your favourite top or putting on those shoes that You've been saving for a special occasion. You deserve to feel good about yourself every single day, especially when You've been up 5 times overnight and You have Baby vomit in your hair. While I'm on that topic, I don't think there is anything wrong with popping your Baby in a bouncer in the bathroom with You while You take the time to have a nice hot shower and wash your hair!

While I am still working on this one myself, sometimes You need some complete Baby free time. Even if its just a trip to the supermarket sans-Baby. Having even an hour without having to worry about whether your little one is about to find the one bit of fluff on the floor and eat it is actually very relaxing.

Sometimes I think the answer is simply choosing to sit on the lounge, have a cup of tea & watch trashy day time TV or play Candy Crush instead of doing the dishes or folding the washing. The housework can wait. Sometimes sanity is more important.

I'd love to hear what You do to keep the balance. Please leave us a comment below with your favourite Mummy-time activities

  1. So true! I have a few rules to help:

    1. Baby (now a toddler actually)must be in bed by 730pm AT THE LATEST. That way a get a decent chunk of "me" time before I fall asleep.

    2. Once baby is in bed no further housework is required. Too bad if the dishes aren't washed. I'll do them in the morning.

If I don't feel like I've rested at the end of the day it just makes me crazy.
