My second pregnancy seemed to fly in comparison to the
first. I experienced the usual tiredness
and nausea that comes with the first trimester and I was so lucky that my
daughter had not started crawling so she was busy playing on the floor whilst I
collapsed in a heap on the couch every afternoon. It also worked out well that she was still
sleeping twice during the day so I could nap if I needed to. It was probably the last trimester that was
the most difficult. Carrying a 12kg
child who had not started walking yet whilst waddling away with my oversized
belly did generated many stares and comments when out and about. Then came the sleepless nights with our
daughter cutting her molars combined with separation anxiety when I was 8
months pregnant – as if I wasn’t exhausted already!
When our baby girl arrived we quickly forgot about all of
this and began our journey as a family of four.
My eldest wasn’t bothered at all when her baby sister arrived – she did
not yet have the jealousy of a two year old and the toddler tantrums hadn’t
started yet. She learned very quickly
how to be gentle and care for her sister and is a great little helper. We have a flexible routine so that I can get
both girls sleeping at the same time during the day, which is precious time for
me to get things done. Now that the
girls are older (2 years and 10 months) we can see how close they are and feel
assured that they will look out for each other.
We love sitting back watching them laugh, and play together.
I think my eldest summed it up for me the other day when I saw her stroking her sisters face saying to me “my baby, my sister, my best friend”.
